Indian Surfers Create History at Asian Surfing Championships 2024

Harish Muthu and Kishore Kumar made landmark progress by advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Asian Surfing Championships, held in Thulusdhoo, Maldives. Harish competed in the men's open category, while Kishore excelled in the U-18 category. This event also serves as a qualifying competition for the 2026 Asian Games.
Harish, hailing from Tamil Nadu, faced a tough challenge in the quarterfinals against Joi Satriawan from Indonesia and Kaisei Adachi from Japan, finishing third with a score of 6.76. Prior to this, Harish secured second place in Heat 1 of Round 3 with a score of 8.43. Kishore Kumar, a young prodigy, achieved the highest score of Round 3 in the U-18 category with 14.33, positioning him well for the quarterfinals against John Chan of Chinese Taipei and Sayyid Salahudheen of Maldives.
Commenting on his performance, Harish expressed pride despite not making it to the semifinals, emphasizing the invaluable experience gained. Surfing Federation of India President Arun Vasu highlighted the hard work and dedication of these young surfers, many of whom hail from Tamil Nadu's fishing communities. He stressed the Federation's commitment to nurturing talent with the ultimate aim of bringing home medals in the sport.
