The Andaman police made a significant breakthrough in their fight against drug trafficking by seizing 2.075 kilograms of heroin valued at Rs 14 crore in the international market. The Superintendent of Police for South Andaman, IPS Niharika Bhat, disclosed in a press conference that the bust followed a tip-off received on August 24.

"The police had received secret information on August 24 that an individual had heroin with him, and based on that, he was arrested, and 1.295 kg of heroin was found in his possession. An FIR was immediately registered," said SP Bhat. Upon deeper investigation, three other individuals were identified as being involved.

"During interrogation of the arrested individual, names of three other people surfaced. Further investigation showed that the drugs that arrived in Port Blair were transported via sea routes and subsequently sent to Kolkata," she added. Upon probing in Kolkata, 798 grams of heroin were recovered.

"The remaining heroin was found with other associates in Kolkata, leading to the recovery of 798 grams of heroin. In total, seven people have been arrested in connection with this case," SP Bhat said.

Addressing the rising drug abuse in the islands, SP Bhat highlighted ongoing efforts to raise awareness among the youth about the dangers of drug use and alcoholism. "We are creating massive awareness among the youth about the ill effects of drugs and alcoholism to prevent future incidents," she stated.

She also urged the people of Andaman to come forward with any information about drug-related activities. "I appeal to the people of Andaman to inform the police immediately if they receive any information on drugs being smuggled, transported, or used," she concluded.
