Online food delivery platform Zomato has been slapped with GST tax demand orders exceeding Rs 4.59 crore, including interest and penalties, by authorities in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

The company intends to challenge the orders issued by the Assistant Commissioners of GST and Central Excise in both regions.

Tamil Nadu's tax authority issued an Adjudication Order under Section 73 of both the Central and Tamil Nadu Goods and Services Tax Acts, 2017, for Rs 81,16,518, with applicable interest and a penalty of Rs 8,21,290. In West Bengal, the authority issued an order for Rs 1,92,43,792, an interest of Rs 1,58,12,070, and a penalty of Rs 19,24,379.

In its regulatory filing, Zomato stated that it presented relevant documents and judicial precedents in its response, but these were apparently disregarded by the authorities. The company believes it has a strong case and does not anticipate any financial impact.
