Tragedy struck near the summit of Germany's highest peak, Zugspitze, when an 18-year-old man was fatally struck by lightning, police reported on Monday.
The young German man, along with two companions, had taken the mountain railway up the Zugspitze on Sunday afternoon and then ascended to the summit, an 80-meter climb from a commonly visited terrace.
As the group was descending from the summit, lightning struck repeatedly. The 18-year-old suffered a fatal electric shock amidst the storm, complicating recovery efforts. Several parts of Germany experienced storms on Sunday, with other lightning injuries reported in Delmenhorst.
