BJP activists stormed the Nandigram police station in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district on Friday during a gherao programme protesting the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata.
Over 100 BJP supporters broke barricades and scuffled with policemen in vain attempts to stop them. The protestors, including several women, raised slogans and briefly occupied the police station before leaving.
A police officer stated that the Rapid Action Force and local police refrained from taking further action to prevent escalation. The BJP activists also blocked the road in front of the police station before dispersing. This protest was part of a statewide 'thana gherao' programme addressing women's safety concerns.
