Ng Kin-wai, the first Hong Kong activist to defend himself in person in a landmark national security trial, firmly stated he felt 'no remorse' over the alleged conspiracy involving 47 pro-democracy campaigners.

Arrested and charged in 2021 for participating in an unofficial poll to select legislative council candidates, Ng told the court he would take responsibility for his actions but would not apologize for his beliefs and values. The trial, under the national security law imposed by Beijing, could see sentences ranging from three years to life.

Despite Judge Andrew Chan noting Ng's lack of remorse and late plea, which could lead to a reduced discount on sentencing, Ng passionately argued for a democratic society that safeguards human rights, rule of law, and justice.
