A ferry loaded with fuel tanks sank in the Russian port of Kavkaz in the southern Krasnodar region on Thursday following an attack reportedly carried out by Ukraine, according to local authorities.

The vessel, transporting 30 fuel tanks, sustained severe damage and caught fire as a result of the assault, said Fyodor Babenkov, head of the town of Temryuk district, which encompasses the port. Casualty assessments are ongoing, with reports suggesting 15 people on board are currently missing. Ukraine has not provided an immediate response to the incident.

The Russian state news agency TASS reported all port personnel were evacuated, adding that a specialized fire train was dispatched to contain the blaze. Over 100 individuals are involved in firefighting efforts. While several Russian media outlets shared imagery portraying the flames and thick smoke emanating from the ship, Reuters has yet to verify these materials. TASS noted the fire did not extend to the port's broader premises.

Kavkaz port stands as one of Russia's largest sea gateways on the Black Sea, crucial for exports and supplying fuel to Crimea.
