The much-anticipated Durand Cup derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, scheduled to take place at Salt Lake Stadium, has been canceled due to the current unrest in Kolkata. This decision was reached following discussions between Kolkata Police officials and tournament organizers.
Both teams will receive one point each, and fans will get a full refund for their purchased tickets, according to an official statement to PTI. Additionally, sources indicate that upcoming matches in Kolkata might be moved to Jamshedpur, pending an official announcement.
The unrest stems from the widespread protests sparked by the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The Indian Medical Association has called for a 24-hour nationwide strike to demand justice for their colleague.
