Tropical Storm Ileana Hits Sinaloa, Causes Disruptions in Los Cabos
Tropical Storm Ileana made landfall in Sinaloa, Mexico after hitting Los Cabos with heavy rain and strong winds. Schools were closed and temporary shelters set up in response. The storm is expected to weaken as it moves north. In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Gordon formed while post-tropical cyclone Francine brought rain to the southern U.S.
Tropical Storm Ileana made landfall on the coast of the Mexican state of Sinaloa on Saturday, a day after it pounded the resort-studded city of Los Cabos.
Forming on Thursday off Mexico's Pacific coast, the tropical storm, with winds of 40 mph (65 kph), moved ashore near Topolobampo City. The National Hurricane Center reported that it moved north at a speed of 6 mph (9 kph), expected to weaken into a tropical depression soon.
Authorities took preventive measures in La Paz and Los Cabos, closing schools and preparing 20 temporary shelters. Rain began late Thursday night in Cabo San Lucas, leading to flight cancellations and road flooding. Despite the choppy waves, guests were reported to be calm.
