The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced it will stage protests at district magistrate offices across the state to demand justice in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case. BJP MLA Nisith Pramanik confirmed the plan while speaking to ANI on Monday.
Protesters rallied peacefully with slogans of 'we want justice,' but police reportedly responded with water cannons, tear gas, and lathi charges, injuring 17 female party workers and resulting in several missing members. Pramanik criticized the police actions, calling them an attack on both the people and democracy.
Clashes occurred between BJP workers and police as they 'gheraoed' the District Magistrate's office in Cooch Behar and staged protests in Siliguri. The BJP is also organizing block office protests on September 4 and a roadblock (chakka jam) for September 6, demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
