Controversial former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was laid to rest Saturday following three days of national mourning. Thousands of supporters had gathered outside a Lima museum to pay their respects.

Current Peruvian President Dina Boluarte honored Fujimori at a formal ceremony in the presidential palace. However, she made no remarks about the former leader, a divisive figure who governed Peru from 1990 to 2000 and died of cancer at the age of 86.

Fujimori's administration is remembered for stabilizing the Peruvian economy and defeating the Shining Path militant group but also for its authoritarian actions and human rights abuses. Convicted in 2009 for crimes against humanity, Fujimori spent over a decade in prison before receiving a contentious pardon. His passing has reignited discussions on his complex legacy.
