Sedition Charges Against Malaysia's Former PM Muhyiddin Yassin
Malaysia's former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has been charged with sedition over a political speech where he allegedly insulted the former king. Muhyiddin, who led the country for 17 months, has pleaded not guilty and faces legal consequences if convicted. The case follows previous accusations of corruption against him.
Malaysia's former Prime Minister and current opposition leader, Muhyiddin Yassin, faces sedition charges for allegedly insulting the nation's former king, his lawyer disclosed on Tuesday.
Charged in a Kelantan court, Muhyiddin pleaded not guilty to remarks made during an August political speech questioning the ex-king's decisions post-2022 general election. Malaysia's unique rotational monarchy is deeply respected, and negative comments about royalty are punishable under the Sedition Act.
Accused also of corruption in a separate case, Muhyiddin claims the charges are politically motivated, while the government denies targeting rivals.
