A special court in Telangana has issued a summons to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, compelling him to appear in person on September 25 in connection with a criminal defamation case initiated by BJP leader Kasam Venkateshwarlu.

The Special Judicial First Class Magistrate (JFCM) for Excise Cases determined that a prima facie case exists against Reddy after examining the documents, witnesses, and arguments presented by the complainant's counsel. The summons pertain to alleged offenses under Sections 499, 171C, 171G, and 153 of the Indian Penal Code, alongside Section 125 of the Representation of Peoples Act.

The defamation case centers around Reddy's statements during a Lok Sabha election meeting in Bhadradri Kothagudem on May 4, where he allegedly claimed that the BJP would change the Constitution and abolish reservations if elected. The BJP contends these remarks were false and aimed at unduly influencing voters, thereby damaging the party's reputation.

Following the high court's directive in June, the Special JFCM was instructed to expedite the proceedings and adjudicate the complaint on a day-to-day basis. The high court's decision came after the initial adjournment of the complaint by the lower court.
