Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was uninjured after multiple shots were fired near his West Palm Beach golf course. An AK-47 was found, and a suspect was apprehended. This follows an earlier attempt on Trump's life in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service is investigating the latest incident.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was reported safe after multiple shots were fired near his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, according to sources briefed on the incident.
The shots were said to have originated from outside the fence line of the course. Trump's campaign initially confirmed his safety but provided no additional details. The Secret Service announced an investigation into the incident, which occurred shortly before 2 p.m. (1800 GMT).
According to a post by Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., local law enforcement discovered an AK-47 automatic weapon in nearby bushes, and a suspect has been apprehended. Reuters could not immediately verify this account.
Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung did not respond to a request for comment. This incident follows a previous assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania on July 13, which left him injured and resulted in the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle due to a security lapse.
The White House released a statement saying President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed and relieved to know Trump is safe. They will continue to receive updates from their team.
