Scuffles erupted on Thursday as police personnel clashed with BJP supporters during a protest march in Kolkata. The protest aimed to address the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital earlier this month.
The march, which started from Hudco crossing and aimed for 'Swasthya Bhawan', the state health department in Salt Lake, faced multiple police barricades along its route. The police initially tried to pacify the protesters but later resorted to using lathis to disperse the crowd, leading to detentions of BJP leaders.
Among those detained were state president Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. Adhikari criticized the TMC government for their actions and demanded Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation. The incident has resonated nationwide, inciting further protests by medics.
