Protesters blocked train tracks, halted buses, and chanted slogans in West Bengal on Wednesday, in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor.
The agitation follows Tuesdays' events when police used tear-gas and water cannons to control crowds marching toward the state secretariat. The BJP, currently in state opposition, called a 12-hour strike against alleged police atrocities.
Thousands, primarily BJP supporters, obstructed roads and railways, compelling shops to shut down. Authorities deployed 5,000 police personnel to counter potential violence. Protesters, many university students, are demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation over her handling of the August 9 attack on the 31-year-old doctor, drawing parallels to the 2012 Delhi bus gang-rape incident. A police volunteer has been arrested, and the federal police have taken over the investigation.
