West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Wednesday, expressed her profound grief and solidarity with the family of a trainee doctor who was sexually assaulted and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Banerjee dedicated the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad to the victim in her post on X.
In her Bengali post, Banerjee lamented, 'Today, on the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, I dedicate it to our sister, whose tragic loss we mourned at RG Kar Hospital recently. We offer heartfelt condolences and seek immediate justice for that incident. We empathize with women of all ages who have faced such inhuman acts. Sorry.'
Emphasizing the crucial social role of students and youth, she added, 'Students must inspire with hopes for a new day, keeping society and culture vibrant. My appeal is for continued commitment to this effort. My dear students, stay well, healthy, and committed to a better future.'
In a parallel development, the BJP organized a 12-hour Bengal Bandh to protest police actions during the 'Nabanna Abhiyan' march to the state secretariat on Tuesday. The rally from College Square in Kolkata saw heightened security, with protestors clashing with police at Santragachi in Howrah, leading to the use of water cannons and tear gas by police.
The unrest resulted in injuries and TMC alleging that the BJP's 'peaceful protest' involved stone-pelting and chaos, describing it as an attack on Bengal. The rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor has drawn national outrage, leading to widespread protests demanding justice.
