Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu filed his nomination on Wednesday as a BJP candidate for the Rajya Sabha bypoll from Rajasthan.

Bittu filed the nomination papers in the presence of returning officer Mahaveer Prasad Sharma, with Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and other key BJP leaders accompanying him.

During a BJP legislature party meeting, Bittu expressed gratitude for being chosen as the Rajya Sabha candidate. Chief Minister Sharma also praised Bittu, currently serving as Union Minister of State for Railways & Food Processing Industries.

State BJP President Madan Rathore, along with other dignitaries, attended the occasion. The by-election follows Congress MP K C Venugopal's resignation after his election to the Lok Sabha.

Bittu is expected to be elected unopposed, as the opposition Congress has chosen not to field a candidate. An independent candidate, Babita Wadhwani, also filed a nomination, albeit without proposer details.

Nomination paper scrutiny is set for August 22. Withdrawal of candidature is allowed by August 27, with polling on September 3 if required.
