Sarjan Ahmad Wagay, known as Barkati, faced a significant setback as his nomination papers were rejected during the scrutiny phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections. Barkati's papers, filed by his daughter, Sugra, were among the 22 nominations dismissed on Wednesday.
Barkati, who rose to prominence during the 2016 unrest following the death of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani, has a controversial background. He was first arrested eight years ago under the Public Safety Act and again detained last year under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The charge sheet against Barkati details a criminal conspiracy involving relatives and family members, accusing him of promoting terrorist and secessionist ideologies through inflammatory speeches. Barkati's rejection was one of many, with Zainapora, Shopian, Anantnag, Tral, Pulwama, and other constituencies witnessing multiple rejections.
