India is on the brink of commissioning its second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Arighat, in a significant move towards bolstering its naval power and nuclear deterrence capabilities. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is slated to oversee the commissioning on Thursday.
The new submarine marks a critical step in enhancing India's strategic military assets. The commissioning ceremony will take place in Visakhapatnam, according to sources within the defence establishment, who also highlighted the project's highly confidential nature.
As details remain sparse, the programme underlines India's ongoing efforts to fortify its defence infrastructure, following the 2016 commissioning of its first indigenous nuclear submarine, INS Arihant. The INS Arihant had previously demonstrated its capabilities with a successful missile launch in October 2022.
