Congress MLA Devendra Yadav was taken into custody from Chhattisgarh's Durg district on Saturday as police investigate the June 10 violence in Balodabazar city, officials report.

Supporters of Yadav gathered outside his residence in Bhilai Nagar area, protesting the arrest with raised slogans.

Yadav is being transported to Balodabazar for further proceedings, according to Balodabazar Superintendent of Police Vijay Agrawal.

Despite police summons to record his statement in the Balodabazar arson case, Yadav did not comply, leading to his apprehension.

Police personnel arrived at Yadav's house at around 7 AM, and after a day of protests by his supporters, managed to detain him at around 5 PM.

The unrest stems from an incident where unidentified individuals vandalized a 'victory pillar' important to the Satnami community.

On June 10, the community protested fiercely, resulting in arson and widespread damage including the destruction of a government office and over 150 vehicles. The unrest led to the enforcement of section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Congress members, including Yadav, are believed to have attended a public meeting related to these protests.

Approximately 150 people, including members of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and the Bhim ''Regiment'' have been detained in relation to the June 10 arson.

The influential Satnami community, founded by historical social reformer Baba Guru Ghasidas, represents a significant Scheduled Castes group in Chhattisgarh.
