On Wednesday, the government declared that 1,037 police personnel from different central and state forces would receive service medals on the eve of Independence Day.

The Union Home Ministry specified that 214 of these officers will be decorated with bravery medals. This includes a single President's Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and 231 Medals for Gallantry (GM). Notably, four GM awards were allocated to firefighters and one to a civil defence personnel.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) received the highest number of bravery medals, totaling 52. Among state forces, Jammu and Kashmir Police were awarded 31 medals, while Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra each saw 17 officers recognized. In a commendable act of bravery, Telangana Police Head Constable Chaduvu Yadaiah was awarded the sole PMG for his heroic efforts in capturing two notorious criminals despite being viciously attacked and severely injured, leading to a 17-day hospital stay.

In addition, 94 President's Police Medals for Distinguished Service and 729 Medals for Meritorious Service were announced. These medals are awarded twice yearly, during Independence Day and Republic Day, to recognize acts of conspicuous gallantry, distinguished police service, and meritorious duty.
