Canada Curtails Temporary Foreign Worker Program Amid Immigration Concerns
Canada is dramatically reducing the number of temporary foreign workers allowed into the country. The cuts are in response to criticism that the program suppresses wages and leaves workers vulnerable. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also hinted at potential reductions in permanent resident streams.
Canada is drastically cutting the number of temporary foreign workers, reversing some of the expansions made in 2022 as the government faces growing pressures to reduce temporary residents.
The program, originally designed to address labor shortages, has expanded significantly but faced criticism for depressing wages and leaving workers susceptible to abuse. A UN special rapporteur has even referred to it as a 'breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery'.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau mentioned that his cabinet is also considering reducing streams for permanent residency. "We're evaluating various pathways to ensure Canada remains supportive of immigration while being responsible in integrating newcomers," Trudeau stated. The government plans to unveil a broader strategy on immigration this fall.
