Germany has resumed the deportation of convicted Afghan criminals, reversing a previous policy halting such actions over human rights concerns under Taliban rule.
The decision follows heightened pressures on the coalition government after a deadly stabbing incident tied to Islamic State at a city festival and the fatal stabbing of a German policeman by an Afghan man in June.
A flight carrying 28 convicted criminals departed from Leipzig after months of secret negotiations, with Qatar acting as a mediator. The German government expressed gratitude to 'key regional partners' for their support and announced plans for more deportations.
