The Kolkata Police on Monday urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation on social media about the rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The case has ignited mass protests and an outpouring of information on various platforms.

In a Facebook post, the Police highlighted the issues they are facing. 'It has come to our notice that several factually incorrect and unverified claims are circulating widely. We urge everyone not to believe or propagate any so-called facts about the case, as they are merely unfounded rumors,' the statement read.

The authorities further emphasized that such misinformation obstructs the investigation and hinders justice. 'These actions not only obstruct the investigation and cause more distress to the bereaved family but also impede justice,' the Police added.

The Kolkata Police assured students and doctors of their commitment to achieving swift justice. 'We assure the public that our investigation is progressing well, and we are dedicated to filing an early charge sheet and ensuring a speedy trial,' the statement conveyed.

Earlier, the Police summoned three junior doctors and a house staff member who were on duty the night of the incident to Lalbazar Police headquarters. Meanwhile, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) launched a nationwide strike, organizing protests outside various hospitals to demand justice for the slain doctor.

The Principal of RG Kar Medical College, Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh, has offered his resignation following calls for his removal by protesting doctors. (ANI)
