Supporters of East Bengal, Mohun Bagan SG, and Mohammedan Sporting Club came together in Kolkata on Thursday to protest against the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The tragic incident has caused widespread outrage and eclipsed the city's football rivalry.

Earlier this month, the season's first derby clash between East Bengal and Mohun Bagan SG was called off due to security concerns amid protests over the trainee doctor's murder. The doctor's body was discovered on August 9 in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital's seminar hall.

The heinous crime has ignited a wave of protests across West Bengal and beyond, prompting President Droupadi Murmu to pen an open letter titled 'Women's Safety: Enough is Enough.' The President expressed her horror and called for societal introspection to address the root causes of violence against women.

Murmu urged society to honor the memory of victims and take steps to prevent such crimes in the future. She highlighted the need to challenge the mindset that views women as inferior and spoke against the objectification of women, which she views as a catalyst for these crimes.

'The gruesome incident of rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata has left the nation shocked. What is more depressing is that it is part of a series of crimes against women. The nation is bound to be outraged, and so am I,' Murmu stated. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently leading the probe, with polygraph tests conducted on Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and the arrested suspect, Sanjay Roy.

Following directions from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the investigation. The Supreme Court subsequently ordered the security of RG Kar Medical College to be transferred to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also suspended Sandip Ghosh's membership amid the ongoing investigation.
