In a decisive move to combat unsolicited calls, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has floated a discussion paper proposing increased tariffs for calls and SMS beyond a specified limit. This initiative aims to tighten the norms around telemarketing communications.

The paper, titled 'Review of the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2018', suggests that telecom subscribers who make over 50 calls or send out 50 SMS a day should be scrutinized as potential telemarketers. TRAI believes that differential tariffs could make it financially unviable for unregistered telemarketers.

Currently, mobile operators offer plans with unlimited calls, but the suggested higher tariffs aim to discourage misuse. Despite previous actions, unwanted calls from 10-digit numbers persist, causing annoyance to customers. The consultation process is now open, with stakeholders required to submit their views by September 25, and counter-comments by October 9.
