The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has extended the deadline for telecom operators to block SMS transmissions containing unapproved web links by a month. Initially, the deadline was set for September 1, 2024, but it has now been moved to October 1, 2024, in response to requests from telecom operators for additional time.
According to a statement released on Friday, the revised directive mandates that from October 1, all traffic containing URLs, APKs, or OTT links that are not whitelisted must be blocked. This new rule is part of TRAI's efforts to curb the misuse of SMS headers and content templates, ensuring a more secure and efficient telecom ecosystem.
Additionally, from November 1 onwards, telecom operators are required to ensure that all messages sent and received are traceable, enhancing the overall security framework of the telecom industry.
