Frances Tiafoe is getting the rematch he wants, a second shot at Ben Shelton at the U.S. Open.

But there won't be a second straight Grand Slam title for Barbora Krejcikova.

The Wimbledon champion was knocked out of the U.S. Open in the second round on Wednesday, defeated by Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-4, 7-5.

The No. 8-seeded Krejcikova won her second Grand Slam singles title this summer but faced challenges in New York, evident after her Paris Olympics hiatus.

"Winning Wimbledon is amazing. I'm very proud," Krejcikova stated, acknowledging the difficulty of shifting to the U.S. Open.

Defending champion Coco Gauff progressed with a 6-4, 6-0 win against Tatjana Maria. Next, she will battle Elina Svitolina.

Tiafoe made quick work on a steamy day, outlasting Alexander Shevchenko who retired after the third set opener. This win means another bout with Shelton, who defeated Roberto Bautista Agut to set up the anticipated rematch.

Ruse advanced to meet Paula Badosa, who eliminated Taylor Townsend. Jiri Lehecka delivered a career-best comeback against Mitchell Krueger and will face Andrey Rublev next.

Aryna Sabalenka and Alexander Zverev advanced, while Zheng Qinwen overcame Erika Andreeva. Madison Keys will meet Elise Mertens after both cleared their opponents.
