Coco Gauff, the 20-year-old American tennis sensation, turned things around dramatically after being a set down to beat Elina Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the U.S. Open's third round on Friday. This victory extends her defense of her first Grand Slam title.
Initially, Gauff made a series of errors at Arthur Ashe Stadium, dropping the first set with a string of 11 lost points. However, bolstered by her coaches and a raucous, partisan crowd, she mounted a comeback by playing more aggressively on her forehand and reducing backhand errors.
Key moments included Gauff breaking to lead 4-2 in the second set, rallying with the crowd, and closing the final set despite a brief hiccup when she failed to convert three match points. Her next match, for a berth in the quarterfinals, will be against the winner of a later match between Emma Navarro and Marta Kostyuk.
