Emma Navarro continued her breakout season by advancing to her first Grand Slam semi-final with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Spain's Paula Badosa at the U.S. Open on Tuesday. Navarro, born in New York, stunned Badosa by winning the final six games of the second set, clinching victory in just 72 minutes.
The American, who previously defeated defending champion Coco Gauff, consolidated an early break to go 3-0 up in the first set. She leaned on her powerful forehand and avoided breaking points to dominate the first set. In the second set, Badosa initially led with a 4-1 double break but eventually suffered a dramatic collapse.
The 26th seed Badosa failed to serve out the set twice, while Navarro held her ground and closed out the match with her fifth break. This season has seen Navarro reach the third round or better at all four Grand Slams, including a fourth-round finish at Roland Garros and a quarter-final at Wimbledon. Her next challenge will be against either two-time reigning Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka or Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen.
