Defending champion Coco Gauff overcame an early test to secure her place in the last 16 of the U.S. Open with a confidence-boosting 3-6 6-3 6-3 victory over Elina Svitolina on Friday. The third seed, who had an easy run in the opening rounds, faced a tough challenge but eventually elevated her game.
Gauff survived early break points to reach 2-2 but fell behind as Svitolina won 11 consecutive points to take the first set 6-3. The match shifted in Gauff's favor in the second set, as she broke for a 4-2 lead and leveled the match.
The deciding set saw Gauff dominate with a 2-0 lead and a 4-1 double break cushion. Although she briefly faltered when serving for the match, she quickly regained control to close out a dramatic victory.
