Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat received a heartwarming welcome at Delhi Airport on Saturday after announcing her retirement from wrestling. Accompanied by fellow wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, and Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda, Vinesh was greeted by a large crowd of fans who showered her with flower petals.

Speaking to ANI, Vinesh expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support. "I am grateful for this love and respect I have received from my countrymen," she said. Bajrang Punia remarked that Vinesh was welcomed like a champion, adding, "The country saw Vinesh's journey from the streets to the podium. We thank all the countrymen."

Sakshi Malik spoke highly of Vinesh's contributions to women's wrestling and the nation, saying, "What Vinesh has done for all the women and the nation is commendable. I hope people will continue to respect her... for us, she is an Olympic champion."

The Haryana-born wrestler turned emotional at the airport, reflecting on her journey. Vinesh was the first Indian woman to make it to an Olympic wrestling final but was disqualified from the 50 kg gold medal bout for being overweight. On August 8, after the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed her petition for a joint silver, she announced her retirement.

In her emotional farewell message, Vinesh wrote, "Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don't have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness."
