In response to a red weather alert, the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals, originally set to begin in Malaga on Wednesday, have been postponed. The decision comes as Spanish authorities forecast extreme rain and flooding, prompting organizers to prioritize safety.
Thousands in the Costa del Sol region have been evacuated just two weeks after Spain experienced its worst floods in modern history, claiming over 200 lives. The tournament's opening match between Spain and Poland is now rescheduled for Friday.
The ITF confirmed that the changes were made to ensure health and safety, and asked for understanding. The tournament, which will overlap with the men's Davis Cup Finals, will see Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal potentially making his final appearance.
