In a significant cross-border collaboration, India and Bangladesh have launched a fisherman repatriation operation set to conclude on January 5, 2025. This effort, facilitated by the countries' coast guards, will see 95 Indian and 90 Bangladeshi fishermen returned to their homelands.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), this initiative addresses the humanitarian and livelihood concerns of fishing communities from both nations. The operation follows several instances where fishermen inadvertently crossed maritime boundaries and were detained by the respective coastal authorities.
The mutual repatriation effort, noted for its focus on safety and welfare, involves the participation of several governmental bodies, including the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Home Affairs, and Fisheries of both nations. This carefully coordinated exchange highlights the commitment to addressing the pressing concerns of cross-border fishing communities.
