The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry of India marked significant strides in 2024, prioritizing the expansion of urban infrastructure. Key initiatives include the expansion of the metro rail network, which positions India to soon boast the second-largest global network, and the construction of over 88 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).
In a push towards smart urban living, the ministry installed 84,000 CCTV cameras and developed 713 km of cycle tracks under the Smart Cities Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission, and AMRUT. These initiatives complement India's commitment to improving urban habitats through sustainable and efficient practices.
Further, the government has initiated the PM-e-Bus Sewa to enhance urban transportation and launched the Swabhav Swachhata Sanskaar Swachhata campaign to promote public participation in cleanliness and sanitation efforts. This comprehensive urban development approach reflects the government's vision for modernizing cities while addressing socio-economic and environmental challenges.
