A massive mudslide caused by heavy rainfall has claimed the lives of six people and extensively damaged houses and National Highway-29 in Nagaland's Chumoukedima district, according to officials on Wednesday.
The mudslide, which occurred at Pherima and Pagala Pahar, also washed away a section of the highway on Tuesday night, disrupting road communication between Dimapur, the state's commercial hub, and the capital city, Kohima. Officials reported that six bodies, including that of a woman, were found in Pherima, where numerous houses and vehicles sustained damage.
In a social media post, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed deep concern over the large-scale destruction caused by the incessant rainfall. Authorities are on-site to assess the situation and aid those affected. The state government is in discussions with the Centre and NHIDCL for immediate restoration measures.
