The Odisha state government has sprung into action for relief and rescue operations following the landfall of a deep depression near Puri on Monday. Authorities are bracing for heavy rainfall, as predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
This weather system, described by IMD officials as a precursor to cyclonic storms, made landfall between 10.30 am and 11.30 am, bringing wind speeds of 55 km/hour to 65 km/hour. The system is expected to move northwestwards across interior Odisha, gradually weakening by midnight.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, along with Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, has issued directives to senior officials and district collectors to ramp up relief measures. Malkangiri District Collector Ashish Iswar Patil has already closed schools and anganwadi kendras on Tuesday due to severe weather conditions.
