In a significant move to ease Mumbai's traffic woes, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announced the extension of the Coastal Road up to Bhayandar in Thane district on Wednesday. The Coastal Road project, which aims to cut travel time between south Mumbai and the suburbs, will now cover the entire western sea-facing line of the metropolis.

Goyal, following a meeting with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, revealed that the construction work would be divided into 4-5 packages. 'Once operational, this will be a huge relief for daily commuters,' he said. The environmental clearance report for these extended stretches is expected by August 23, following discussions with Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav to expedite approvals.

Estimated to cost Rs 14,000 crore, the Coastal Road will directly connect with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Additionally, Goyal has engaged IIT Bombay to consult on mitigating Mumbai's traffic congestion. Meanwhile, a new sports complex in North Mumbai, in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India and Maharashtra government, will serve urban youth and talented individuals from nearby rural areas, utilizing existing budget funds.
