Telegram Chief Durov's Arrest Raises Questions on Global Influence
Pavel Durov, the Telegram CEO, was arrested in France over the weekend amid allegations related to child sex abuse, drug trafficking, and fraud. His detention extends another 48 hours. The arrest has sparked speculations about U.S. involvement, while Telegram continues to be a key platform in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Telegram boss Pavel Durov could remain in police custody until Wednesday following his arrest in France, French prosecutors announced after extending the questioning period. This comes amid allegations of child sex abuse, drug trafficking, and fraudulent activities on the platform.
Durov, a Russian-born billionaire, faces a 48-hour extension to his detention. The arrest has prompted speculation from Vyacheslav Volodin, a senior ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who suggested that the United States, through France, is attempting to exercise control over Telegram.
As a major platform used in the Russia-Ukraine war, Telegram attracts nearly a billion users worldwide. While praised for its user-friendly interface, it is also a hub for far-right and conspiracist movements. French President Emmanuel Macron denied the arrest was politically motivated.
