Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, was shrouded in tension on Thursday as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan announced plans to go ahead with a rally despite the government's refusal to permit the event.

Attempts to showcase political strength through a rally were stymied when Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa suspended the no-objection certificate (NOC) previously granted on July 31, citing safety concerns and potential law and order disruptions.

In an additional move, the Punjab Home Department imposed Section 144, banning gatherings and rallies across the province for several days. Despite these setbacks, PTI leaders remain defiant, planning a "peaceful" rally in Islamabad. Security concerns led to the closure of schools in the federal region, amid fears of violence and sit-ins reminiscent of past protests.
