The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified calls for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the sexual assault and murder of a female trainee doctor. However, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh rebuffed the demands on Wednesday, highlighting that no BJP chief minister has stepped down in similar instances.
Ghosh emphasized that the investigation is now under the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a body he described as congenial to the BJP. 'The Supreme Court has directed doctors to resume work, so why aren't they?' Ghosh questioned. He further cited previous instances under BJP governance, including the Hathras, Unnao, and Bilkis Bano cases, where no resignations were tendered.
Meanwhile, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari led a protest rally, with participants donning black t-shirts, demanding Banerjee's resignation. In tandem, the Supreme Court formed a 10-member National Task Force aimed at preventing violence and ensuring safe working conditions for medical professionals. The case continues to spark nationwide protests and strikes within the medical community.
