Union Home Minister Amit Shah distributed citizenship certificates to 188 refugees under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Sunday. Shah highlighted that the CAA is designed not only to grant citizenship to millions but to provide justice and rights to those who have faced decades of neglect.

Addressing the gathering, Shah criticized the appeasement policies of past governments that left refugees deprived of rights from 1947 to 2014. He accused previous administrations of failing to deliver on promises out of fear of losing their vote bank, thereby leaving millions of people yearning for justice across generations. Shah hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for addressing these injustices through the CAA.

Shah pointed out the historical context, citing the division of India on religious grounds at the time of independence, which led to severe riots and suffering for minorities in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. He reiterated that the CAA was a promise fulfilled by the Modi government in 2019 to ensure justice for refugees from Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jain, and Christian communities. Shah clarified that the CAA does not have provisions that revoke anyone's citizenship and stressed its purpose is solely to grant citizenship. He assured that the act will provide amnesty and justice to refugees, marking an atonement for past atrocities.
