Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday criticized previous Congress-led governments for denying citizenship rights to a large number of refugees due to appeasement policies. Addressing a gathering in Ahmedabad, where he handed over citizenship certificates to 188 Hindu refugees in Gujarat, Shah emphasized that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) aims to grant rights and justice to lakhs of refugees.

Shah reassured the Muslim community that the CAA does not contain any provisions for revoking anyone's citizenship; instead, it focuses on granting it. He accused past governments of allowing crores of illegal intruders to become citizens while denying legal citizenship to genuine refugees seeking refuge from 1947 to 2014.

The Home Minister also highlighted the plight of minorities in neighboring countries and said that India's current government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeks to provide justice to those persecuted for their religion. He urged refugees to apply for citizenship without hesitation and guaranteed that their jobs and properties would not be affected.
