The Trinamool Congress rallied across West Bengal on Saturday, demanding swift and severe punishment for those responsible for the rape and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Protesters, carrying placards reading 'Doshider shasti chai' (we demand punishment for the culprits), marched in various locales including Serampore, Naihati, Belgharia, Chinsurah, and Purulia. They also condemned what they termed as a conspiracy by the BJP and Left to destabilize the state.

'We also denounce the conspiracy by Ram-Baam (BJP and Left) to destabilise West Bengal and disrupt the prevailing peace by politicising a shocking incident of rape and murder,' said TMC MP Partha Bhowmik at the Naihati rally.

In Kolkata, Mayor Firhad Hakim led a rally demanding the death sentence for the guilty, asserting the state's zero-tolerance stance towards sexual assaults.

These protests follow the opposition's own rallies demanding justice for the victim. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had previously led a rally on August 16, calling for the death penalty for the accused.
