The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Saturday made an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, listing several demands following the sexual assault and death of a female trainee PG doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Bengal.

The IMA has requested the introduction of a Central Act that incorporates the amendments of 2020 into the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897 to enhance existing state legislations. Among their demands is the declaration of hospitals as safe zones with mandatory security protocols similar to those at airports.

The association also called for a thorough investigation into the crime and appropriate compensation for the victim's family. They highlighted the necessity for improved working conditions for resident doctors. The tragic event has incited a nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors from August 17 to August 18.
