In a swift response to the recent rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical Hospital, the Uttar Pradesh government has issued a comprehensive directive to bolster safety and security measures for doctors and staff in state hospitals. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak has directed hospital management to prioritize staff safety, adhering to Supreme Court guidelines.

"Certain individuals are seen loitering in hospitals without any patients admitted. They often stay overnight for rest. Action must be taken against such individuals. Admit cards should be issued for attendants needing night entry into wards, ICUs, resting rooms, emergency wards, and IPD departments," stated Pathak. He highlighted the necessity of enhanced security for women doctors and nurses who move between blocks during night duty, emphasizing the importance of proper lighting to deter anti-social elements.

Pathak also called for surprise inspections by security officers during nighttime hours, along with questioning of attendants sleeping on hospital premises. He mandated that a 24-hour control room be established and staffed by adequate security personnel, including retired army personnel, and called for regular coordination with the nearest police stations.

An internal sexual harassment committee will be formed under legal provisions for women doctors and employees. "CCTV cameras in the hospital must be regularly checked to ensure they are functional and sufficient in number. Police verification of contract and outsourced staff is also mandatory," Pathak added.

In cases of violence against hospital staff, an FIR will be lodged by the hospital's in-charge or an authorized person, termed as an institutional FIR, ensuring the responsibility lies with the hospital. These initiatives aim to foster a safer working environment for healthcare professionals across Uttar Pradesh. (ANI)
