In response to criticism, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi declared on Sunday that the Biju Patnaik Sports Award would not be renamed. The Sports and Youth Services Department had earlier issued guidelines for this year's award, proposing a renaming to 'Rajya Krida Samman'.

Majhi asserted that his government holds great respect for the state's historical figures, including Biju Patnaik, and would not alter the award's title. He revealed that he learned about the renaming from press reports.

Further, Majhi highlighted that Biju Patnaik's contributions to the state and nation are unforgettable. Opposition BJD, led by Patnaik's son Naveen Patnaik, was strongly against the renaming, calling it disrespectful to a revered former Chief Minister. BJP spokesperson Dillip Mallick defended the government, noting Odisha's long tradition of honoring its sports legends. Since its inception in 2001-2002 by the former BJD government, the award celebrates outstanding sports personalities in eight categories annually.
