Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni declared she could continue working with Ursula von der Leyen, despite her Brothers of Italy party voting against von der Leyen's second term as head of the European Commission. On Thursday, the European Parliament backed von der Leyen's bid for another five-year term leading the EU's executive body.

"We have cooperated until now and we will continue to do so in the future," Meloni remarked on her relationship with von der Leyen. In an interview with Italian daily Corriere della Sera published Saturday, she noted, "We are people who have responsibilities and understand their importance."

Meloni, who has been at the helm of Italy's right-wing government since 2022, endorsed von der Leyen's stance on controlling immigration but called for Europe to reduce regulations and enhance economic competitiveness. She highlighted Italy's significance as the EU's third-largest economy and founding member, boasting its stable government among major EU nations.

The Prime Minister also expressed readiness to collaborate with any future U.S. president, stressing the enduring strength of the U.S.-Italy alliance. "To think that an alliance between two G7 nations would change with a change of government is stupid and childish," she affirmed.
