In a controversial move, the central government led by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has declared June 25 as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas', or 'Constitution Murder Day', sparking criticism from opposition parties. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sudhanshu Trivedi questioned opposition leaders about the 1974 agitation led by Jayprakash Narayan, asking if it was anarchy.

The 1975 Emergency, imposed under the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, saw the suspension of civil liberties and the imposition of strict censorship to maintain order. Trivedi further criticized Indira Gandhi, stating she was the only Prime Minister convicted of electoral malpractices by the Allahabad High Court, which led to the emergency.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the Emergency a dark phase of Indian history and noted that June 25 will be commemorated as an annual day to honor those who suffered. Opposition leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Trinamool Congress's Kunal Ghosh, condemned the decision, accusing the government of diverting attention from current issues.
